Leg 1, Detroit Malibu Open
I arrived in Detroit on Tuesday and passed through immigration without a problem. Was picked up by Ten-Eighty Sales Rep Brandon Waters. We had an easy evening and finished the day with dinner.
Wednesday morning they hooked up with a friend of Brandon who had a new Malibu VLX and hit the lake for 2 practice sets. Lunch at Taco Bell and then they went to the local Malibu dealer. I had another set there to show off. For dinner everyone went to Hooters.
Thursday, I helped the Malibu dealer move the boats to the tournament site. Little practice later in the day. All the other riders had arrived at that point. Tournament registration and a party in the evening. An amateur competition was going during the day.
Friday, the Malibu Open – Quake on the Lake got going. Not just a wakeboard competition, but water skiing and drag hydroplane boats going 200+ MPH. The wakeboard completion was 15 riders in Men’s Open. Friday was the semi-Finals and the 15 riders were in 4 heats, with the top 2 riders in each heat advancing to the semi finals.

I rode well but had 1 fall during his run. Had another fall outside of the course trying to rush 1 last trick in before the end of the course. I am going to need a no-fall run to get to the next level. I am confident I have the tricks, now I just have to put them together better for the judges and NO SWIMMING!! Points wise, I had the highest score not to make it to Saturday.

Friday night another party at the event site. Back to the hotel late.
Saturday, Men Wakeboarding was down to 8 riders. Two heats of four riders, and the top two riders in each heat would advance to the finals on Sunday. Not a lot of wakeboarding, but there was always something going on.

Saturday night, it was back to the hotel early. I and all of the riders sat in the hotel lobby drinking beer bought at 7-Eleven across the street until 5am.
Sunday, the wakeboard finals had Philip Soven come 1st place again.

Sunday night all the riders had dinner and then went to a movie. So much for the party lifestyle.
Monday, everyone was heading to the airport to fly home. I was flying directly to Toronto. Here is where things got interesting. Ten-Eighty was planning on having several riders and a team going to wakestock. Unfortunately, due to injuries and scheduling problems, no one from Ten Eighty would be there. A back up plan was there, but that fell through as well.
I sits at the airport for a few hours waiting for someone, anyone. Next a taxi to the official tournament hotel. Nobody. A few more hours and frantic e-mails for help, Bomb checked with the Radisson on room rates. $350 USD plus tax. A few more urgent e-mails. Bomb asked the desk again about rooms and explains his situation, the nice Canadians gave him a room for a discounted rate. Total including tax, $330. What a bargain.
Monday night, I stayed awake all night because he thought he was paying too much for sleeping and would try to be awake for the entire 14 hours he had the room.
Tuesday.
Geoff arranged a room at a youth hostel near a university just down the street. Luckily tehy had a single room available and I has been there since then. After I checked in Tuesday afternoon, I have the next 1 ½ days to be a tourist. Checked out the tournament site, and explored Toronto. Dinner at a Thai restaurant Wednesday night, my first Thai since leaving.
Thursday, 2:00 I was due to go to the tournament site, Toronto Island for registration, and then the crazy weekend starts again. As of midnight Toronto time Thursday evening, I haven’t made it back to his room.
Friday. First round of WakeStock. 40 Riders in the Boat tournament. I am also competing in the Rail Jam. You can see more at
